Inflammatory Disease

At Boston Children’s Hospital, at least four children have been affected by a rare inflammatory disease that is possibly connected to coronavirus.

The inflammatory disease has been called “pediatric multi-system inflammatory syndrome” by Doctors and may be linked to the coronavirus. It causes fever, rash, and inflammation, and is occurring around six weeks after a child has been exposed to COVID-19.

It first reported in Europe last month and, in the last few months, more than 50 cases of the syndrome have come up around the world. According to NBC10 Boston, doctors are anticipating that the numbers will rise, however, the risk is low.

Experts are reporting that the conditions are similar to the Kawasaki disease, or toxic shock syndrome. The Kawasaki disease can have long-term impacts on eyes and skin.

Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Dr. Paul Sax, told NBC10 Boston that parents should feel encouraged since the illness remains “very infrequent and that children are by and large tolerating this pandemic in ways that we wish adults were.”

During a Senate panel earlier this week, White House Expert on infectious diseases, Dr. Anthony Fauci said there is still so much that is unknown.

“We really better be very careful particularly when it comes to children,” Dr. Fauci stated. “I think we better be careful if we are not cavalier in thinking that children are immune to the deleterious effects.”
