Mayor Walsh’s executive order to exempt all establishments from the plastic bag ban ordinance will stay in place until September 30. Additionally, reusable bags have found to be safe and will now be permitted when shopping in Boston

Boston had originally suspended the ban on plastic bags and five-cent fee for paper bags back in March, and the city decided to suspend that time to help serve residents and businesses.

While plastic bags aren’t banned, the Mayor was adamant that reusable bags are safe.

“…I want to be clear that the Boston Public Health Commission and the state Department of Public Health have said that reusable bags are safe and people should feel free to use them.”

While the extension will run until the end of September, the City is prepared for the plastic bag ban to begin on October 1st.

The plastic bag ban went into effect in December of 2018. For more information, visit the city’s website here.
