Hansel & Gretel

One of the world’s most well-known fairy tales is coming to the Boston area. Next month, the Imaginary Beasts theatre ensemble will put on an adventurous production of the classic German tale Hansel & Gretel in what is sure to be an unforgettable show. Whether you’re a diehard theatre fan or just remember the story from your childhood, this is one show you don’t want to miss – especially after you read that while supplies last, Boston on Budget readers can get tickets for half-off.

Hansel & Gretel was first published by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm in 1812, although the tale had likely existed for centuries before the Brothers Grimm wrote it down and may have its roots in the Great Famine which lasted from 1315 to 1317. In the well-known Grimm version of the story, two children are abandoned in the woods by their parents in the midst of a famine. The children eventually stumble across a house made of baked goods and treats in the middle of the woods, and that’s when things get interesting.

Imaginary Beasts’ production of Hansel & Gretel will continue the troupe’s tradition of pushing the boundaries of how theater is made and who can make it to create a truly eclectic vision of this classic fairy tale.

Hansel & Gretel will be performed at the Charlestown Working Theater in Charlestown throughout the month of February.
